A VERY BRIEF HISTORY

The Dinorwic Slate Quarries in Llanberis North Wales were famous for their quarry Hunslet’s working the many levels in the quarry opposite Snowdon. Only three non Hunslet locomotives operated at Dinorwic - if you discount the very early De Winton and Padan Horlock Locomotives. Of these only Sybil built by W.G. Bagnall in 1906, came new to the quarry. She worked in the Quarry until 1965, four years before the Dinorwic Slates Quarries closed for good.

In 1965 she was purchased by the Evans Family and moved to the Private Inney Valley Railway in Cornwall. Sybil has remained with the Evans family from then until today.

Sybil ran for a number of years but eventually needed a major rebuild including replacement of a 1930’s Dinorwic built boiler.

In 2012, James Evans, also owner of Dinorwic Quarry Hunslet “Velinheli” and founding creator of the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway “Lyd” on the Ffestiniog Railway, decided to sell “Sybil”.

A group of members from the West Lancashire Light Railway discussed with James the idea of setting up a trust of like minded individuals to own, restore and operate “Sybil”. The Sybil Locomotive Trust was formed and purchased Sybil. The trust is delighted that James is a member of the trust, maintaining the Two Owners from new status.

Now that Sybil has arrived at her new home, plans are underway to start her restoration. The biggest task being  a replacement boiler.
